The growth of megacities is one of humanity’s most intriguing design challenges. The task is often framed as a technical one, of innovation and real estate, but really it’s a cultural one too. And there’s a fundamental tension between what must be built quickly, and what can only be grown slowly.
How do you design a city for today? The answer is you don’t. You can’t prescribe meaning, you can’t rush belonging. What you can design are the conditions for a city to become itself – the social anchors, the districts, the public places, and the systems that tie them all together. Success comes from cultivating culture, not imposing it.
